A WALK WITH BILL SAMUEL

METAPHYSICS IS A WALKING STICK, NOT A CRUTCH

Many have written me about loneliness—aloneness—and I answer all of you here.  It is a subject I am familiar with—we are all familiar with.  From the human standpoint I have been alone.  I have been lonely.  I have suffered the bereavement of abandonment, the dereliction of desolation, the forlornment of friendlessness and forsakenness, the seclusion, the awful seclusion of unsought solitude. I (as Bill) have been alone, unassisted, unaided, unattended when it seemed I needed personal comfort—when I wanted something more than metaphysical mollification, more than philosophical platitudes.  We have all cried for a relief more tangible, more holdable, more concrete than an injection of philosophical inspiration at different times in our experience.

And you know, loneliness isn’t limited to being physically alone.  It can happen in a crowd.  One can be surrounded by family and loved ones and still feel desolate, deserted, insular, isolated, reduced to ashes.  I know. I know.  But dear friends, all of you whom I love so, no matter how awful this loneliness, no matter how arduous the experience of it when it appears is as it should be and serves a purpose!

“What?  What?  My God, what?!” asks the lonely heart; asks the single flower blooming in the corner of the garden; asks the last leaf on the limb; asks the solitary sentry at his post; asks the bleeding soldier clawing at the mud; asks the mother at the bier of a child; asks the evening whippoorwill as the sun goes down.  Who hasn’t asked the reasons for suffering?  Who hasn’t wondered about loneliness?  To the human sense of things, loneliness is a suffering, and suffering is a loneliness that screams.

Darkness is what Light knows Light is not—the means by which it knows infinitely.  The All One is never alone in any kind of anguish—and knows it.  Hopefully the long, preceding pages have helped make this clear.  A further study of them surely will.  But, for the moment, put the study aside and take a walk with me.  Listen softly.

There is a pathway leading to the river. It goes down a hill, crosses a road, winds through a field soon to be green with Spring.  Then it enters the forest and makes its way along ridges, across gullies and washes, over beds of leaves and pine-straw, fallen logs and rocks.

I usually walk with a stick.  Oh, there’s great comfort in carrying a stick with one.  There is more to it than meets the eye.  My habit of carrying a stick grew out of a soldier’s loneliness, if nothing else—and out of the comfort of feeling the wood of company and companionship in one’s hand.

A stick serves to steady one in steep places and to help one over the hard climbs.  It serves to brush branches out of the way and to turn over strange stones for an examination.  A stick lets me tilt a flower toward me for better seeing, without having to bend down every time.  It lets me bat pinecones like a little boy—or send seed spattering over the ground where it will be nested by the wind and rain to grow in another season.  A stick, a staff, can be such a friend.

And yet, I’ve seen it be a protector too.  Predators have been turned aside by the sight of it.  I’ve awakened sleeping rabbits with it, but it also reaches out and brings the muscadines within touch. It can bring a wild apple tumbling down and sometimes turn the leaves aside revealing a fig the birds haven’t found—or a persimmon that clings to the branch.  In the summer it can tap the wild plums into my hand or turn away the briars of blackberry to let me reach the fruit.

What has this to do with loneliness?  Really, I don’t know—except it allows me to tell you that I have learned that even a simple walking stick—a piece of cut dogwood, willow or laurel—can be company and comfort for me.  And if one can do that from such a simple piece of wood, don’t you see that you can find comfort for yourself too, out of the much you have—and out of the much that is available to you?  If comfort resides in such a small tangible thing, how much more is available to us in the intangible and unseen?

Love to you from my hills of Alabama,
                               ( Bill Samuel )

                              SYMPHONY OF LIFE

Life is One All-inclusive Symphony, a Perfect, harmonious Symphony with an infinite repertoire of jubilant joy and sweet sorrow and all the nuances therein.  The Symphony does not discriminate against, nor is it intimidated or disturbed by its sorrowful parts.  It does not ignore the passages that sing of anguish and pain,  or of the agony of loss, it does not try to silence them or to pretend they are something other than what they are, it plays them with as much heart and gusto as it does its light and happy, glorious and triumphant parts.  It is all One wondrous Symphony echoing the Sweet Wonder that is Life.  The lonesome violin reaches the depths of soul and opens the Heart to feel...not to make judgements of good and evil but simply to feel and to let Be. The most tender and loving parts of the Divine Symphony, in fact, sing of the sweet sorrow, of anguish so rich and so deep to reveal the delicate beauty of God's Love.

Outside is inside and inside is outside.  It is as the symphony tuning its instruments before the concert.  Though the tuning appears to be outside the symphony, the sounding of false notes is not outside.  Symphony knows ALL of Itself by knowing what it is and what it is not... it knows all this within Its Own Self-Awareness, Its Own Self-Revelation.  Symphony does not condemn itself, it does not condemn its false notes, it strikes the precise, true note pure and clear and holds that note until all instruments resound to its perfect pitch.

If the instruments (individual you/me/microcosm) are not tuned, the Symphony (macrocosm) can only perform a cacophony.  In tuning, the false notes are played, the lies are exposed and harmony is re-established as all instruments play in the same pitch.  The Symphony now gives a Perfect Melody of Joy and sorrow, one as beautiful as the other.  Instrument in tune, one tastes the sorrow's sweetness and knows there is no evil.  Inside is outside and outside is inside... in unison,  we sing the One-der (wonder) and Glory of Love as the One and Only Son(g) of God made tangible in the brotherhood of man.  Nothing is changed yet everything is changed.  We could say, conversely, that everything is changed but nothing is changed...but our world is New.

We are the Awareness, God's Awareness being aware of ItSelf playing that Melody of Love.  God could not Know or examine ItSelf other than through/as this One right here.  We are the where and the when of the Divine Symphony disclosing itself to itself.  There is nothing to do or change, the time is NOW to clang the cymbals and shout "Halleluia", I am already  IT", and to march on with courage to the beat of our very own Heart's drums!  The Symphony that is one with each and every note frees the Heart to leap for joy and dance to Its own Delight or to weep and let the body shake in anguish or despair from every form of loss and to be free to feel good about it. This is especially true for the dear men on our planet who have been conditioned to be responsible, to be in control, to be tough and rational and logical and full of false pride, men who have been made to feel unworthy if they are humble and trusting and sweet and loving and patient and kind and ...

Some have been confused, thinking that the human can be reformed and made into a better person, that Light makes the human more comfortable, more secure, more spiritual.  That's not it at all!  Seeing and knowing does not make the mortal more pleasant, more lovable, more giving or more 'powerful', more healthy or wealthy... more anything.  If God is One, (and I am that One) Changeless, Immutable, can anything be more than That?  What does it matter if I am supposedly enlightened or not 'enlightened'?  To whom would it matter, to whom would it make a difference?  Could I, would I change the Light or prevent it from being all that It includes?  No, I cannot change the Love of God, nor can I be separate from this One, no matter what the world looks like or does... God stays the same no matter what happens and nothing can happen to God.  So, I am free to carry on and do what I do and it makes no difference.  All the while, I know that nothing that is Real is limited or subject to any of worldly events or circumstances or people or things.

One author referred to the stone we carry in our shoe,  the stone of false identity, thinking that there is something else to study, to understand, to acquire or do or be but when we let go the search the stone disappears and we walk in a comfortable shoe...perhaps it's not a pretty shoe, a stylish shoe that 'others' admire and expect us to wear but a most comfortable shoe that allows us to walk the high roads and the low roads and through the potholes without a care!

The walk takes us to that Place...to the Eye of the storm that we can observe the images and know they can never touch us. Within The Symphony we are free from trying to be something we are not, we are released into unfettered Life, Light frees us from the harness of rules and conditions and dogmas, from the need to fit into a mold.  The Symphony is an on-going song of crescendos and variations in tempo... it is Love Ever-New!  You are perfect just as you are, you cannot be 'less than' or 'more than' the Only One Is!.  Eternal Love is The Melody, clear and True!

Paradox and Balance

Rose Burrows
(Copyright R.Burrows)

Dear One, you are awake now, you have seen Me, you feel my gentle Love, you know you are safe. You remember your dream and you know the dream is significant...you see your shadow and are fascinated by it. All is as it should be. You do not have to contend with the shadow, you need only understand it and when you understand it you love it. It is as simple as that. Love loves Its Self, All of Its Self, Love even loves no love, there is nothing outside of Love. No love, the sense of 'no-self' ,  is the darkness that makes Love (Self) plain, no love cannot be excluded.

no love is the dark sky
 that makes the star
 twinkle ever so bright

You, My Child, My brilliant Star, are the Balance. You walk the fine line between Love and no Love. You are the edge of the sword, you walk between  Me and no me, and though you embrace 'no-me sense' and 'me sense' you know that the whole is greater than its parts. Though you are not separate from Me you are my expression of personal, individual Me, all One. In order to know this Self I am Being as You, in You, through You,

you must see what you are not
that you may see what you are.

Precious One, I tell you that the Life you are is My mode of experiencing My Self, the very Self of You,  in visible form, it is all about You and once again I reiterate that I Am You... I, the Father am greater than thee but all that I Am you are, you are the heir to My Allness. You know what you are not now, as you wake up from the dream of 'no me'. Open your Eyes to the New View now, Precious One. Your life is your very own Love story, it is your love affair. It is all about the One you are, there is no other.
Love is not complicated.  You complicate it when you exclude one little iota of your experience.  Love is like a sweet and sour sauce.  If you taste the ingredients separately they taste sweet, sour and every variation in between but when you include  all the ingredients,  they are in proper balance and the sauce is very good. Though it is still sweet and sour, the sauce is also neither sweet nor sour but it is greater than the sum of its parts and it is a perfect sauce.

Likewise, you cannot compartmentalize yourself, or exclude any of the precious attributes and qualities  that make up You.  You live the Equation, everything in proper Balance (the Child does the job) and it is very good.

You are to cherish the wonder, the beauty that appears before your very eyes for you are It, you are to feel the joy and the sorrow that are the very Essence of Love you are.

You are here:

to feel the alcoholic's, the drug addict's,
the derelict's pain
and know that that anguish is the
birth pain of the broken heart
discovering itself as Love
as the All-that-Is

You are here
to hear the song of the cricket
and know the Joy of
unaccountably Being
all within
the Heart of Awareness

You are here:
to see the infinite colors
in the rainbow
and know that Love is
more than a word or gesture
it is magic, heart-felt
and visible

You are here:
to taste the ice cream cone
and in Child-like innocence
instantly know the
sweetness of God's
Love

You are here:
to smell the exquisite rose
and marvel at the fragrance
and delicacy
of its Infinite Source

You are here:

to know that the act of
clipping your toenails
is no less holy and sacred
than studying a holy book

You are here:
to laugh from the belly
the joyous sounds
of freedom and liberation
 the Divine Comedy
knowing you have arrived
from whence you never left

And you will forever know Me
And know
That you know Your Self
For we are eternally One!

Home is Where the Heart Is

Dedicated to Every Soldier

Home is where the Love Light beams!
The holiday season that brought the magic of love upon its wings,  savoring the comfort of family and friends, the sweetness of being close, of belonging, of being at home, at ease and at peace with the world, this season has come and gone.  The joy of presents, giving, sharing, the soft peaceful sounds of caroling, singing, celebrating reverberating from the essence of our soul has quickly faded away.  Being the carefree, joyful, innocent child, expecting good at every turn, brought peace and contentment to hearth and home. There was a spirit of good will and good cheer in the hearts of men.  Whether we are conscious of it or not, this is our natural state of being because the glory of love is not limited to a holiday season, love is what we’re made of  and can never leave us.

I got in my car the other day and turned on the radio.  A song came on the air, a song that touched the core of my being. It was an all-inclusive love that relates to  my 'collective self' that is each and everyone of you.  The song was about a soldier who calls home to tell his wife he loves her.  His little boy answers the phone and says: "...daddy, when are you coming home?"
       His response:
" I'm already there
Take a look around
I'm the sunshine in your hair,
I'm the shadow on the ground
I'm the whisper in the wind'
I'm your imaginary friend
And I know I'm in your prayers
Oh, I'm already there"
(Lonestar  - "I'm Already There")

I felt a lump in my throat and a deep sense of compassion for the plight of families of the military who are separated because of love and devotion for their fellowman and for all the families that are separated, for whatever reason, whether temporarily or permanently.

Dear soldier, there is only One Heart, that Heart is God's love being the whole scene right here, right now... your heart is my heart, and oh, how I feel, know and am the love that flows there from.  I feel your anguish as you are torn away from your home, family and friends, yet I know, in my heart, that people and things and events, per se, are not good and evil.  The darkness of separation makes love shine clearer and brighter and the dear ones are closer to your heart in their absence.  We sometimes take our loved ones for granted and  we lose touch with the magic in ordinary living, and when we do, we do not feel the gratitude that is the natural outcome of love.  But absence makes the heart grow fonder and for that we are grateful.

I feel and know and am the pain of the broken-hearted soldier going to war, leaving his family behind, yet carrying them lovingly in his heart, seeing them in the sunshine and in the shadows and never really leaving them.  It is a brave soldier that picks up his ammunition, putting his life on the line for his neighbor.  A most valiant Heart he is, willing to kill or be killed, fearful, yet fearless and full of love, as he marches on to war, doing what he must do...feeling the pain, knowing joy and sorrow...seeing what love is, knowing what love is not...yes, Love revealing Itself to Itself and we are the evidence of it.

It matters not if that soldier is a Taliban soldier, a USA, Canadian, British,  Afghan or Pakistani or Israeli.  It matters not if his values are same or different from mine, if his beliefs, his ideologies and convictions co-incide with mine or not, that soldier is someone's son, brother, husband, or daddy and their heart is no different.  They weep the same tears, they too feel the agony, they too are fearful and fearless, brave and valiant.  They fear that their loved one may be harmed, or possibly never return.  The wives grieve for shattered dreams, for their own pain and for the pain caused their children; mothers pine that their son’s life so young and full of promise may be snuffed out.  And their children sob that daddy cannot tuck them into bed at night, they miss the loving arms around them. All hold their loved one ever closer to their heart and in their prayers.
The circle of  love expands, the friends and precious ones of all the above are of the same heart and experience the same joys and sorrows,  they laugh with the same joy and they cry the same tears,  making it plain that our hearts are One.   Pain delineates sorrow, the joy of belonging to a family is made abundantly plain by the sorrow of separation.  A rippling effect occurs and touches the whole planet, which explains the saying that the whole universe shakes and trembles as one leaf falls to the ground. And we see that light shines and love is right there in the midst of plain and ordinary daily living.
We are more than flesh and bones and muscles and blood, we are really Light and Heart and Soul, and That which is the glory before the world was and that being so, we are not the 'form' in time and space, we are the Presence that is being Love and is the source of all forms...of all mommies and daddies and children and soldiers.  Christmas and all its magic is right here where you are every day of the year!

And so, dear soldier, take a look around ---
You're already there!

Love and peace and gratitude to all of you!

Honest Love
William Samuel

Once upon a time I had the notion that "Truth" was supposed to help me eliminate my trials and tribulation.  I guess I expected the tree's shadow to go away when I finally discovered the tree.  It didn't. But my attention shifted somewhat from the shadow to the tree, so I wasn't as conscious of the shadow as before.  But there is never a day when I don't STILL see the shadow as before and have to remind myself that the shadow led me straight to the tree -- what a blessing for that.
Our search for the Tree of Life doesn't end the shadows of mortality.  At least it never has for me.  I've never INTENDED to give an impression otherwise.

Keep on keeping on.  So will I.

                                   Christmas Joy
                       RoseBurrows

May the Child live Its Sweet Innocent Love
As Xmas sings and dances in your Heart
The magic of making dreams come true
The blissful blissful state of the soul at rest
In eternity's Self-wonderment

Joy to the world
Peace on earth
Is more than a dream
It is the adult disarmed
Disrobed of pretenses
Of all conditioning
of fears and woes
Living the spirit of Christmas
Every day of the year

 William Samuel

The Christmas season commemorates our own

awakening birth of the Christ Truth within,

arrival of our own identity. The Christmas

season marks the prodigal’s return from

the land of husks. This is the time when

the fires of the hearth are rekindled—the time

for coming home.

Coming home to what? To consciousness, to

Identity, to the heritage promised us from the

beginning to the Love we are, to the carefree

Child we are. To warmth  and tenderness,

simplicity and gentleness- to the happiness

that REALITY is.

Reader, if could give the gift of childlikeness, I

would. But this is our nature already—and this

is the only nature that comes to see, accept

and live the Real. Intellectuality decries the

season, anxious to have it over. But

childlikeness sees the sparkle of silver tassels

all year. Childlikeness listens to the laughter

of angels every minute. Childlikeness tastes

the sweet sugarplums of Simplicity right here,

right now—and feels the gentle Love of

Christmas forever!

Star Light
by Sandy Jones

The twinkle of Light comes to me night and day, in all that I am doing, all the time;  God is All in all and God is Love.  A twinkle of Light that catches my eyes and It makes me smile and giggle.  It is so simple and so clear.  Sweet gentle Truth.  I just stay here at this twinkling light of the beginning.  The beginning is right here where I stay.  The beginning, for me, is always, always the same.  It is so easy to find the beginning, so easy that it seems to take an innocent child-heart to find it; God is All in all and God is Love.  There is no other, and hence no other to concern myself with.  No other One that God and God's Awareness.  This Awareness, this The Now I Am.

I begin my day in the Silence of His Presence where this light shines and I start all thinking from The Higher View.  The vision that sees the World and all that is within it, as God's Awareness, God's Grace, God's Mind.  Consciousness appearing as tangible world. I see all this as One Self, the Self of God being what God Is.

What a wonder!  the recognition of this always brings the gentle, sweet "Peace beyond understanding", always.  Peace is Here at the Beginning.  The Beginning is a comprehension, a recognition,a remembering or sense of The Infinite, all time and all space, and Now as the Totality of God and God's Awareness.  This is It, there is nothing more or less than God.  At this place where I see all things from the beginning, I stand atop all things, I see and live and be God's Aloneness and Self-Awareness.  This is All in all and there is nothing else besides This One.

Here, at the top, at the beginning, I see an expansive vision, an infinite view that is all inclusive, nothing else going on, really.  Here I live and the tangible world is a myriad of images, images made of The Word of God, the Very Voice of God, images that exist because God is speaking, seeing and being all that is.  I see images in abundance and some appear to be up to their own personal little world's business, but in fact, whether they know it or not, they are always going about the business of being About the Business of God, God alone.

From here, from atop the Great Mountain, I see there is nothing that goes on that can affect the incorruptible peace of The One That is Being This very Mountain, Now Presence. The one Mind that is being all that It includes of Its Self.

This reminds me of that quote from Heinz Pagels (quantum physicist).  He said "If you want to build a robust universe, one that will never go wrong, then you don't want to build it like a clock, for the smallest bit of grit could cause it to go awry.  However, if things at base are utterly random, nothing can make them more disordered.  Complete randomness at the heart oof things is the most stable situation imaginable-- a divinely clever way to build a sturdy universe."

Thanks Heinz, this makes perfect sense.  Divine Intelligence certainly knows what It is doing.

It is a good point.  I know it's true.  How else could God be, but absolutely Total and therefore absolutely incorruptible.  Absolute has no beginning, yet This One is the Beginning without end, that comes from nowhere and goes nowhere and is the living source of this very moment.  God is all that is and is this perfect Now and what peace this gift of discovery brings.  What a Joy Life is.  How amazing Grace is, indeed.  Here It is all the while, just looking at us straight in the face, and most don't even notice.

Well, I must say, the breeze from up here is soft and easy, simple, sweet and fresh.  A glory it is.  I stand on top of God's Great Mountain and all that is going on is all so very beautiful just as it is.  How can it not be beautiful when I know that God IS the very cause of it all.  God is being the energy, the power, the Light that makes the tangible universe.  God is the Mind, the Tone, the Song, the Twinkle that makes the world visible.  I am in Love.  Everything is beautiful because God is being the totality of it all.  Here is the Joy.  This Love that God Is is Total and complete, it is all That Is.  There is nothing to fear, ever.  Top down view, the view that sees the world with the eyes of the heart, simple and sweet it is; sees with God's eyes, real eyes or realize, I know God is All in all and All is Perfect Being.  I know surely this is Heaven right here and now always.

It is all Love, and this Love Is,  whether humanity-man loves or does not love.  This Love is manifest in the world.  It is manifest now and does not depend on anyone or thing in order to be.  This Love, It is already Love, Is Love, I am It because there is no other.  Love is Now, and Now is sacred, forever Here because God is All that is, the very I that I Am.  Self inclusive Oneness is the Isness of What Is and It is about the business of Being Here and Now.  "Thy Light Is come" already, now is Light the Love, Life. Life is God and this Life is Now.  This very moment is God's and there is no other moment.  We are living it.  This is It and it is the miraculous.  We are, already the Living Miracle.  We need do no more than we already Be.  I find The Beginning and stay Here, sweet and simple.
